Anawim Christian Community is a community church made up of the homeless and the mentally ill. Our main goal is to provide for people's needs (including the need to be a disciple of Jesus) where they are at. We don't feel that a person needs to be something different before they get the help they need. Our center is in Gresham OR, which is where we lead and organize day shelters and a worship service. We also have a community house in N. Portland where housing is being provided for a few people and opportunities for community worship. We are connected to ministries in SE Portland and St. Johns, where we distribute food and clothing. And finally, through the internet, we educate people from almost every country in the world about homelessness, mental illness and the Christian response to each.

Welcome to the first Anawim Christian Community Newsletter!

Welcome to the first Anawim Christian Community Newsletter!

We hope that this newsletter will be informative for your life and your prayers. If you are looking at this wondering, “What the heck IS Anawim? Some sort of new age cult? A new kind of whole grain?” Anawim is a Hebrew word that means “the poor and outcast who seek the Lord for deliverance.” In Portland, we are a community church for the homeless and the mentally ill. We also want to help provide opportunities for service, for both the poor and middle class. And Finally, we want to inform all people about the homeless and how to minister to them. Want to know about Anawim?

Do you have a question about the homeless or mentally ill, which you would like answered? Just ask us at our email address, anawimcc@gmail.com  and we'll try to answer asap!

Newsflash!

Newsflash!
It seems that our campaign encouraging people to keep breakfast bars in their cars, to hand out to people on the street, has been successful! Steve heard a couple sign holding folks say, “All we get are bars now!” So he asked, “What about socks? You want some people to give you those instead?” They both answered, “Please!”
Those of you giving bars, please keep socks with you and give them instead, if you can!

Poverty Summit for East Multnomah County
On Saturday, September 18, a group of ministries involved among the poor in East County will be speaking about how we can be involved with the poor. Key speaker will be Marshall Snider, Director of Bridgetown Ministries, speaking about how to get YOUR church involved with the poor (even if some may not want to!). After the three hour summit, there will be a BBQ where folks can speak with the ministries as well as some of our local homeless. It is being held at 9am-12pm at Peace Campus (19626 NE Glisan).

For information about any of these events, please contact Steve Kimes, stevekimes@aol.com

When you have a celebration, invite the poor, the crippled, the handicapped—all those who cannot pay you back—and you will be repaid at the reward of the righteous.” (Luke 14:13-14)

What Does It Mean To Be Homeless?
This question seems obvious. Clearly, homelessness is being without a home. But what is a “home”? And what does it mean that someone doesn't have one? The problem with using a term like “homeless” is that it means so many different things. And one must solve the problem of what a thing is before we can begin discussing how to solve it. If you have five people and they all say something different about homelessness, then how can they agree to solve it? see more

What Do Communities Say About The Homeless?
Antioch is a community south of Nashville Tennessee. Some homeless people who were living in a tent city near the cumberland River had to relocate when the river flooded a month ago. Homeless outreach workers, of which Jeannie is one, were working to get the homeless who were living in tent city moved into more humane circumstances. A respected buisness man, hearing of the plight of the recently displaced homeless, had offered 2 acres of his own land, in Antioch, for a new, temporary tent city. When word of this spread around Antioch, the community demanded a hearing. The following is Jeannie's response to that hearing see more

Prayer Requests

Prayer Requests

Pray for Anawim as we take on greater responsiblility. Our leadership and the folks on the street are now partially responsible for two buildings and the property surrounding them. It’s a big responsibility, but we’ve been up to it, so far. Pray that our excellent start will continue.

Pray for violence done to and among the homeless community. Pray that the Spirit of peace will descend upon the homeless in Gresham and Portland.

Pray for the First Baptist Church of Gresham. They’ve had issues with certain homeless folks whom they’ve been ministering to and they are considering not having homeless ministry. Pray for their discernment process.

Pray for Pakistan. The flooding there will soon make this disaster more serious than Haiti and Indonesia and Katrina combined. Seek the Lord for His mercy for them and that His gospel will be known there by believers who truly act like Jesus.

Needs

Needs

Anawim could use some volunteers for the Day Shelter in Gresham! We’d like to open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and we need just one or two volunteers per shift to make it happen!

Anawim could use more cooks and helpers for cooks. On Sunday afternoons and Friday evenings we could use some folks to help us cook for our meals in SE Portland. This is a great ministry for a Sunday school or Bible study!

In kind donations:
Socks! Health items, such as antibacterial ointment and ibuprofen. Deoderant and toothpaste. Socks!
Canned food of all kinds, especially canned meat or fish.
Oh, and Socks!!!!
